Chief Kenneth Okorie hit the hard truth
In an exclusive interview with the legal and chronicles in Accra.
The national chairman of the Ebonyi state progressive union Ghana, Mr Don Kenneth ogbonnaya okorie has shed light on the relentless efforts being carried by Nigerians in Ghana to assist stranded compatriots, rescue trafficked women and children, and secure the release of those unjustly incarcerated.
Speaking passionately Mr okorie explained the union's interventions in Ghanaian prisons where many Nigerians are languishing without proper legal support.
We cannot fold our hands while our people rot in prison due to lack of representation or awareness with the help of concerned human rights lawyers and sympathetic Ghanaian,
We have been able to secure the release of several Nigerians.
Every life restored to freedom is a testimony of hope for our community.
We have encountered heartbreaking case of nigerian girls deceived with promise of jobs or better opportunities, only to be exploited in forced labor or prostitution.
Myself as an individual and our union have intervened by providing immediate care, rehabilitation and safe deportation for many of these victim , they deserve a second chance in life, free from exploitation.
Most of our operations are funded by personal sacrifice and voluntary donations from members, the needs on the ground far exceed our resources Strong network which are not always available, a few bad element have tarnished the image of Nigerians, making it difficult for the hardworking and law abiding citizen to gain the trust and support they need.
Despite these obstacle, the union has recorded significant milestones, including, release of Nigerians from prison rehabilitation and deportation of trafficked women and children.
Provision of food, shelter and basic support for stranded Nigerians, strengthening relationship between Nigerian groups and Ghanaian Authorities.
Mr okorie ended his address with a call for collective effect from Nigerians and relevant Ghanaian authorities.
This is not work we can do alone,
Nigerians in Ghana must unite across ethnic and religious divides to protect our people.
We also urge the Ghana immigration services, Ghana police, and civil society groups to continue their collaboration with us, Humanitarian work in about solidarity, not isolation. We can restore dignity to our people.
The words of Mr Kenneth capture a spirit larger than one man or one union, they reflect the determination of Nigerians in the diaspora to raise above stigma, hardship, and division, and to stand as a beacon of resilience and compassion.
Mr Okorie concluded, the true greatness of Nigeria will not only be measured by its wealth or size, but by the way it's people care for one another, even in foreign lands.
